MCSR provides a PBS interface for researchers to submit jobs to available supercomputing platforms. This is a tutorial on how to use PBS to submit jobs to such systems and monitor their status.

What is PBS?

The Portable Batch System (PBS), a flexible workload management system, originally developed to manage aerospace computing resources at NASA. PBS has since become the leader in supercomputer workload management and the de facto standard on Linux clusters. With PBS you can better control your computing resources. This allows you to unlock the potential in the valuable assets you already have, while at the same time reduce dependency on system administrators and operators.

Why Should I Use PBS?

PBS provides users with a single coherent interface to all their computing resources. It can improve understanding of computational requirements and user needs and provides a more cost-effective solution.

What Happens to Interactive Jobs?

An alternative to using PBS is submitting jobs interactively, but this has limitations on the MCSR systems. More to the point, jobs submitted interactively to sweetgum will be subject to a maximum total CPU limit (i-limit) of 30 minutes. Interactive jobs exceeding this 30 minute i-limit will be automatically killed by the system. All interactive jobs are forbidden on all nodes of the mimosa cluster while On Redwood, currently CPUs 0-7 are designated as for interactive jobs. Thus, all interactive jobs are run on these processors without a time limit.
