PuTTY: A Free Win32 Telnet/SSH Client

PuTTY is a Secure Shell application that runs on any Windows 32 bit system.  It can be freely downloaded at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html. 

Easy Steps for setting up PuTTY:

 

  1. To download the application, locate this line

 

putty.exe (latest release of PuTTY for Intel x86; also download by HTTP)

and click on the putty.exe to download from their FTP server or HTTP to download the application via HTTP. 

  1. When prompted to save the file, save the application to Desktop.  This should create an icon like the following.

 

 

 

  1. Double click on this icon and the following screen will appear.

 

 

  1. Enter the desired host name and select the SSH protocol.

 

 

To open the session, click on the Open button at the bottom of the window.

 

  1. To save sessions in PuTTY, enter the host information, select the protocol, type in a desired name for this session in the Stored Sessions box, and then click on the Save button the right. 

 

 

The user can now select saved session name to open a new secure session.

 

  1. After opening the secure session for the first time, this screen will appear.

 

 

Click on Yes, and the user will be able to log in.  This message will not prompt the user again for this particular secure session.
