11 Courses at 3 IHLs Supported by MCSR This Year

In the 2008 spring semester, MCSR is supporting over 81 class accounts over 4 course offerings at multiple Mississippi universities. In fall 2007, 155 class accounts spanning 7 university courses were supported. In summer 2007, 20 class accounts were supported in two courses.

For the first time this year, MCSR accounts were used in Jennifer Zielgelmayer's CIS 314 Object Oriented Programming course at Delta State University. Also for the first time, students in Vicki Webster's Microcomputer Applications I/II courses at DSU used MCSR accounts to get their hands wet with Unix. Jerry Kandies' CIS 370 Operating Systems students at DSU continue to use willow for Unix programming exercises; Milam Aiken's MIS 609 E-Commerce and Internet Programming students at Ole Miss continue to use MCSR facilities for PHP, Perl exercises; Joe Zhang once again used mimosa to teach MPI programming to students in his CSC 630 Parallel Computing course at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Since 2001, MCSR has supported many hundreds of instructional accounts of students in over 82 courses spanning 5 Mississippi universities. We recognize that each university in Mississippi has a unique set of needs when it comes to access to high performance computing systems. For those institutions that are between heavy HPC research projects, we offer student access to stable Unix and Linux systems featuring not only parallel programming libraries but also a variety of compilers and math/scientific software applications. In addition to the free instructional accounts, which are good for one semester, and may be extended or converted to research accounts upon request, MCSR consultants are available to assist you and your students in getting started in what might be an unfamiliar computing environment, to include coming to your class for an introductory workshop . If you require a compiler or software package that is not currently installed on one of our systems, we will be glad to discuss the possibility of acquiring it in time for your course offering.

To learn more about instructional computing opportunities at MCSR, or to request a set of instructional accounts for students in one of your courses, please email us at assist@mcsr.olemiss.edu.
