60+ Distinct Workshops Available from MCSR
One of the services offered by MCSR is conducting training workshops on a variety of computing topics. Our consultants have been busy developing over 40 new workshops over the past year or so, bringing the total number of workshops offered to over 65, and growing. Each workshop is designed to last just under one hour, and most have a structured hands-on component, so that participants can actually try out what they learn. Many have an online take-home deliverable, such as a set of power point slides or a supporting web page.
The workshops break down roughly into five fuzzy categories: Unix, Programming, Math Software, Statistical Software, and General Computing. Many of the new ones have been "tried out" on the Ole Miss campus this year in the UM IT Computing Camp seminar series. Computing Camp (broken down into Math Camp, Stats Camp, and Unix Camp) has offered six seminars per week in Weir Hall on the UM Campus over the 07/08 academic year, for a total of over 140 workshops conducted. J. Hale and K. Curry attended the 2008 Creating Futures Through Technology Conference in Biloxi, where they gave a presentation about this workshop series: "Setting up Camp: Creating a Nurturing Research Computing Environment."
This year's Computing Camp is dwindling down with the Spring semester, and our consultants will be busy over the summer reworking or polishing existing titles while planning new offerings for the following school year. If you are interested in seeing certain topics offered differently, or others offered for the first time, or if you are interested in being a guest presenter for a workshop, please let us know. If you work or study at one of the other seven IHL's in Mississippi, or the UM Med Center, and you are interested in having some of these workshops offered on your campus this coming fall or next Spring, it is not too early to let us know what you are thinking about. Ideally we can pool together several requests from each campus and give a full day of seminars at each site, each semester. Otherwise, we can make a special trip for your class or department, or schedule an offering over the Access GRID.
Please see our list of current workshop titles at our Seminars Web Page, or visit the Computing Camp Web Page to see notes from what we offered this past semester.
