Sweetgum OS/PBS Upgrade Improves Fairness

Over the weekend of March 22, the sweetgum operating system was upgraded to Irix 6.5.14, and PBS Pro 5.1.4 was installed, replacing Open PBS. April 5, the upgrade was consummated when Irix 6.5.15 was added.

One of the advantages of PBS Pro is the increased ability it give us to create fairness by setting global limits on the number of jobs any individual user can have running or queued on the system at any give time.

New Policy: As of March 24, no sweetgum user may have more than 3 jobs running at once (regardless of queue distribution), nor more than 6 jobs queued in any queue combination.

While we can never ensure that every user will be satisfied with their slice of the resource pie, we believe this upgrade, and the queue policies it allows us to enforce, will offer a fairer, more stable, environment to our researchers.
